Just do it!

Hello Lovelies

Today I want to talk about some of the things I have learned as an artist.

The best advice I can give to an aspiring artist or writer is to “just do it”. This is easier said than done though as I know first hand.

I used to procrastinate due to the desire for perfection. Whatever it was I was working on had to be perfect or it wasn’t good enough. It was paralyzing in many cases.

More good advice would be not to compare yourself to anyone else's work. There will always be someone better and someone worse. Comparing can lead to frustration and disappointment.

I had to learn that lesson. I had always wanted to be able to paint photorealistic art. I’ve never been able to get there. Perhaps I could one day if I was persistent and practiced often enough. I highly suggest finding your own style and embracing it. Do the art for the experience, not just for the end product. I understand the need to create with the intention of it being sold or popular, but that’s not the way that works for me. Once I learned to appreciate my own style, art became more enjoyable.

My last bit of advice for today is to use references. And by that I mean photos or examples of what you are creating. Don’t try to draw or paint from memory. The way things look and the way you THINK things look can be very different.

So, what advice do you have for artists starting out? I’d love to hear them.
